Let’s talk about Synchronicity
You know…those sometimes eerie often stunning coincidences? The ones that make us pause and wonder if there’s something bigger conspiring and inspiring?
A lovely new friend, Eugenia, who I met in Indonesia, shared a synchronicity with me recently that brought us together. She first noticed me at a café because of the feelings wheel sticker on my laptop and felt drawn to say hello—but she hesitated. Then, just as she second-guessed herself, a seed from a tree above fell directly onto her head. She took it as a sign not to doubt her instincts and introduced herself. I’m so glad she did because we ended up spending several beautiful days together in Bali, and I hope to see her again soon in California!
Synchronicities have been an enchanting obsession for me—ranging from those small fleeting winks (someone texting me the moment I think of them, or eye-gazing with a hummingbird minutes after an inspiring conversation about belonging) to life-altering moments that change everything. Like the time I called upon the tantric goddess Baglamukhi, and exactly two weeks later, felt her fierce protection during an attempted robbery in Mexico. Or when, in the midst of a painful separation in Colorado, an artist residency opened up in my friends Shilpa and Austin’s eco-tiny home in Berkeley, CA, offering me a gorgeous place to land. These moments remind me that life is so incredibly sacred and mysterious—a reminder that feels especially vital in today’s world of brutality, fear, and crisis.
"Synchronicity is an ever-present reality
for those who have eyes to see."Carl Jung
Synchronicity isn’t just personal—it’s collective
Jung coined the word synchronicity, but the phenomenon is ancient and universal. Many Indigenous traditions have long recognized synchronicity through omens, signs, and messages from nature—whether in Native American teachings, where animal encounters serve as spiritual communication, or in Yoruba Ifá divination, where cowrie shells reveal the unfolding patterns of life. In the Vedic tradition, the principle of Rta teaches that nothing is random—everything moves within a cosmic order. In Bhakti Yoga, synchronicities are often seen as expressions of divine love—playful affirmations that our devotion is not one-sided. The longing of the devotee calls forth a response, and the divine answers in ways both subtle and profound. A chance encounter, a song at the perfect moment, a dream, or an unexpected sign…
“The clouds burst and the rain pours down,
and I see his face in the water.
Oh Krishna, is this not your way.
To remind me that you are everywhere?”Mirabai
It’s not just about individual moments of guidance though. I’m beginning to see synchronicities on a highly collective scale too, appearing through people and movements that emerge at precisely the right time as synchronistic catalyzers of collective liberation…
I think about Rosa Parks, who refused to give up her seat on December 1, 1955—not the first to resist, but her act came at a pivotal moment when the Civil Rights Movement was primed for a large-scale response.
I think about George Floyd, murdered on May 25, 2020, during a global pandemic. The names of many Black men killed by police and white supremacists had gone largely unheard before him—but in a world unusually still and watching, his death became an inflection point, a rallying command against systemic racism.
I think about Bisan Owda, a journalist documenting Gaza’s realities for years, yet only in 2024 did her voice break through to global consciousness. Now, she’s a symbol of Palestinian resistance and resilience, awakening millions to awareness and action.
Maybe(!) unlike catching 11:11 on the clock 3 days in a row or spotting a red dragonfly who may be a grandmother, these figures—who go viral at pivotal moments—feel like synchronicities on a global scale. They remind us that history, too, has a rhythm; that the right people, voices, and movements arrive precisely when they are most needed.
Why does synchronicity matter—especially now?
My obsession with synchronicity isn’t just a personal fascination (or a coping strategy— which is definitely is). It’s also spiritual activism. In a world where fascism and hate are viral, choosing to highlight the sacred magic in our interconnections feels like resistance.
Paying attention to synchronicity isn’t just about finding meaning in our lives—it’s about trusting the unfolding, even in the chaos. It’s about paying attention to wisdom from beyond our “logical” brains.
“When the soul lies down in that grass,
the world is too full to talk about. Ideas, language,
even the phrase each other doesn’t make any sense.
The breeze at dawn has secrets to tell you.
Don’t go back to sleep."Rumi
Research shows that our brains are wired for spiritual experiences. When we are open, attuned, and paying attention, synchronicities multiply. Meditation, prayer, and ritual activate what Dr. Lisa Miller calls the “awakened brain,” heightening our sense of connection, purpose, and resilience. Psychologists have even identified post-traumatic growth—the idea that meaning-making in hardship helps us transform pain into strength. Synchronicities often serve as those north stars, keeping us aligned, reminding us we’re not alone.
We’re navigating personal, collective, and planetary crises with no clear end in sight. It can feel terrifying to be alive right now. But perhaps synchronicity is a medicine we’ve always had—one that reminds us to trust, to stay open, and to listen for another way.
So I ask you, dear reader—what hydrates you with wonder when the world around us is burning to ash? What reminds you that you and we are held in something bigger?
"When you live your life with an appreciation
of coincidences and their meanings,
you connect with the underlying field
of infinite possibilities."Wayne Dyer
Maybe it’s time we all pay closer attention to the synchronicities—so we can co-create a world of possibilities beyond what we’ve known.
